What You Can Learn From Famous Olympians About Dating

I have never been much of an athlete, unless you consider the two sports in which I lettered in high school great feats of fitness: golf and cheerleading. I did, however, prepare for my online dating life as if I was in training to win the gold medal of love (i.e. the perfect guy). After years of dating practice with many love injuries and disqualifications, I finally got to the finish line. If you are still in the midst of the dating rat race, perhaps these words from famous athletes can inspire you to stay in the game!

“If you don’t have confidence, you’ll always find a way not to win.”

– Carl Lewis

Those who have the best results online always approach it with confidence. They do not count the messages they’ve sent and received in order to calculate their success ratio. They do not worry if the sexy girl they talked to on the phone will like them as much in person. They simply show up as themselves with the assurance that the right person will recognize their wonderful qualities and want to be with them.

“I think that everything is possible as long as you put your mind to it and you put the work and time into it. I think your mind really controls everything.”

– Michael Phelps

A positive attitude is attractive, so you must always show up putting your best foot forward. Also, keep in mind that great relationships don’t just happen. You have to “put the work and time into it,” as Phelps said, to insure that you are meeting the best possible matches. Plus, this way you are keeping the relationship on course to succeed.

“I decided I can’t pay a person to rewind time, so I may as well get over it.”

Serena Williams

People have the tendency to play out the same relationship patterns over and over again, whether they are the ones that were modeled for them with their parents or in their own failed romances. Leave your dating history at the door and come into each relationship anew. Dwelling on the past, talking about it, or even thinking of it, keeps you stuck there.

“Set daily, monthly, and long term goals and dreams.”

Nastia Liukin

When I coach clients in dating, I always begin with goal setting. This often feels unnatural to people at first. Singles sometimes have the romantic idea that love will just happen to them. And it might…but in the meantime, you should be doing everything you can to make sure you are tipping the odds in your favor. You need to have a picture in your head of the person you would like to meet. Then make yourself visible and approachable both online and offline if you are serious about finding “The One.”

“One chance is all you need.”

– Jesse Owens

Remember, it only takes one right connection for you to become a JDate Success Story! If you stay positive, consistent, and determined (like a skilled athlete), you will be more likely to find the relationship you dream of online.
