cont-mt-laura-stevenDear JDate,

I first replied to a JDate profile in January 2000. I had done a search for women in the Orange County, CA area and got 400 matches. I started to peruse the profiles and saw one I liked. I contacted the girl, but found out that she had already met someone. The second person I contacted was Laura (now my wife). We sent a couple of e-mails back and forth and then decided to actually talk on the phone. Sparks flew from the start.

After two phone calls, we knew that we had to meet, so we arranged a semi-blind date. I say semi because Laura had seen my picture but had not put one in her profile, so I did not know what she looked like. Her profile said she was 5’4″ and a petite blond. My mother said she was probably 195 lbs. I went anyway.

I sat in the restaurant and waited and waited and waited. Laura arrived at 8:05 p.m., 5 minutes late. She was everything she said she was. We ate and talked for 3 hours. During our conversation, we discovered a substantial amount that we had in common. As we continued to talk, we realized that we were meant for each other and that our lives had paralleled each other’s in so many ways. We were both Aquarians, both psychology majors, and both Jewish, and we both had very difficult families. Our date progressed to drinks at midnight at the beach, with a romantic kiss at the end. We made plans for our second date immediately. Laura and I were inseparable, and we decided to live together within a month of meeting each other.

She is an amazing woman, and I am so lucky to have her in my life. I went through some difficult personal problems during the first 6 months of our dating life, but Laura stuck by me the whole way. She was dedicated to us and was not going to allow me to fall on my face. I knew she was the woman for me, and so, once I was better, we decided to get married. Unexpectedly, Laura became pregnant during the planning phase, and the wedding had to be moved up a little.

On October 15th, 2000, we tied the knot in a garden in Laguna Beach, CA. I wore a kilt (I was born in Glasgow, Scotland), and Laura was stunning in white. It was a very beautiful ceremony. Laura works as an Assistant Buyer for Robinson’s May Corporation, and I work as the Director of Early Childhood Services for the Jewish Community Center of Orange County. Our son, Benjamin Michael, was born in Mission Viejo, CA on March 15th, 2001, at 8:05 a.m. (ironic that this was the time Laura showed up for our date).

Now, we always encourage our single Jewish friends to visit JDate. It worked for us!
