Relationships can be a lot of work even when you live near each other. Adding in distance can certainly be a challenge, but it’s a challenge that can be completely worth it and more than possible. When hundreds or thousands of miles are between you and your partner, it might not be the easiest thing in the world and it might get frustrating at times, but there are ways to make it work! Use these tips to keep you long-distance relationship strong and healthy.

1. Make An Effort To Communicate Often

As we all know, communication is of utmost importance in any relationship, but that’s especially true in a long-distance one. When you can’t easily drive or walk or take the subway to see your partner, and there’s a lack of in-person interaction due to the distance, you have to make even more of an effort to communicate. Whether that means by the phone, via text or over FaceTime or Skype, do whatever works best for you and your partner. And this doesn’t just mean communication about deep and heavy topics, but also the light, fluffy ones, too.

2. Cultivate Trust And Honesty

Because you’re not going to be together all the time, in the same place, your partner will naturally be going out without you and meeting people without you, and vice versa. You have to trust each other completely or it simply won’t work out. They might be meeting and talking to attractive, single people. You can’t worry that every person they meet they’re going to fall in love with and leave you for. Because if you do, you’re going to drive yourself nuts, guaranteed. Be honest with each other and trust each other, always.

3. Don’t Neglect Your Previous Life

As for all relationships (long distance or not), you never want to become totally dependent on your partner. You should have a life of your own like you did prior to meeting this person. And this absolutely holds true – maybe even more so – when you’re dating long distance. I know you might want to stay in on a Friday night and talk on the phone to your partner all night long, but don’t neglect your friends. Go out, have fun and live your life. You shouldn’t have to give up everything in order to make a relationship work.

4. Split The Travel

Being in a long-distance relationship means traveling to see each other as often as possible. If it’s economically feasible, you should split the travel. Half the time you travel, half the time he or she makes the trip. There may even be certain times you meet in the middle. Traveling can be exhausting and expensive, so it’s important for you both to put in equal effort for it to work.

Long-distance relationships can absolutely work as long as you both want it to work and put forth the effort. Yes, it can get frustrating when you can’t be together all the time, but a successful long-distance relationship is possible. And don’t forget that it can be fun, too. Each time you’re together is extra-special, and when you’re with the person you’re meant to be with, distance won’t matter.
