Sun, heat, a fabulous summer wardrobe, BBQs, the beach…oh, I get goosebumps thinking about how much I love the summer season! Summer puts everyone in a significantly better mood, and I don’t know how it goes down in other cities out there, but in New York, everyone becomes significantly more attractive once the warmer months hit.

Where are these beautiful men hiding the other nine months of the year? I mean, really! People literally hibernate in this city when it’s too cold out. (I was totally guilty of this!) But once the second half of the year starts rolling around, oh boy! And a summer fling just adds some delicious icing to the cake.

Finding Your Fling

As we all know, most of New York City heads east come summer. Weekends are no longer spent at three birthday parties a night downtown; they are spent in the Hamptons or Fire Island or by the shore. That’s where you’ll find packed beaches, parties and other activities simply swarming with singles.

Where do people in your area head for the summer? If you’re new in town, ask around. This is need-to-know information because, if you’re single and oh-so-ready to mingle, you’ll want to make plans to head to these local summer destinations. It’s a great place to flirt with some cute singles and maybe even find a fun fling for the summer.

And if you’re looking for something more, don’t count out the possibility of a fling. Don’t get me wrong, I know a fair amount of people who have met their current boyfriend or girlfriend over the summer, and though it may have started as a summer fling, years later they are still dating! So, summer flings do have the potential to turn into something more; just don’t go into it thinking that way or you’ll ruin the vibe.

Keeping Things Casual

Summer flings are a great situation. Having someone to hang with throughout this glorious season is just fantastic. And the relationship seems to come easier, too; for some reason, summer flings tend to happen more naturally and feel less serious, which makes the whole situation with this new girl/guy that much more enjoyable.

But in order to keep things fun, you need to know how to approach a summertime hookup. Summer flings should be handled as such: a fling! Here’s how to do it:

  • Girls – I’d advise you to NOT get “heady” when summer flinging. I mean, I’d advise that all the times, but especially not when dealing with a guy you just see on weekends at the beach. Don’t over analyze. Don’t over think. Just have fun! Come fall, I’ll allow you to take things a bit more seriously, but in this short season, live it up.
  • Boys – I’d advise you to be cautious when flinging with multiple girls. For example, telling all the girls you’re “seeing” where you’ll be one night isn’t wise because if they all show up, you’ll be swimming right into the Bermuda Triangle, and we know nothing good comes out of that.

If you handle it correctly, a summer fling can spark some of your best memories of the season. Looks like Sandy and Danny had it right all along.

“Oh summer lovin’ had me a blast, summer lovin’ happened so fast…”
