I had no plans to join JDate, or any other online dating site for that matter. I was at the tail-end of my divorce and dating was the furthest thing in my mind at the time.

My best friend urged me to just “look” on JDate, which I did. At the time, there was a “special” being offered. The special offered a significant discount to join for six months. So, not being able to resist a bargain, I figured I didn’t have anything to lose!

I made it pretty clear in my profile that I was only looking for a social companion, not necessarily my soul mate (though my soul mate is, of course, exactly who I met)!

Jon’s JDate name was “traveler78258,” which I recognized as my own zip code as well. The decision to even view his profile was simply out of curiosity about someone who obviously lived very close to me.   When I read his profile, I noticed several things we had in common, one of which was that we both were raised in Westchester County in New York. I wondered what path led him to land in San Antonio, Texas!   So, I boldly went where I had never gone before…I (GAgirlinSATX) sent “Traveler78258” a JDate message. As I recall, this was one of the first contacts and perhaps the very first initial contact I made after joining!

My message was simple: “I noticed in your profile that we have a few things in common. I also grew up in Westchester. Would you be interested in chatting further?”

“Traveler78258” responded quickly with a yes, so the next night we chatted for a few minutes on JDate and he mentioned a wine tasting the following evening, which happened to be less than a mile from my house and right on my way home from work. So, we met at the wine tasting, which was on April 13, 2010.

We were recently married on May 26, 2013, and are looking forward to our honeymoon!

Jon’s Story:

I had been in Texas for less than a year and a half and had no luck meeting anyone interesting. I thought about what I had heard about a member of congress back in New Jersey. He met the love of his life and current wife on JDate – so I thought, if it worked for him, why not me?

Not long after joining JDate, I received a message from “GAgirlinSATX.” It was short and to the point; no crap in her profile about long walks on the beach, etc. And, she was the most gorgeous woman I had ever seen. So, I answered her message and we planned to meet for a date at a wine tasting on Tuesday, April 13th.

Sitting at the tasting of Chilean wines, I was on my third tasting when I saw her. “GAgirlinSATX,” this gorgeous redhead, came over and asked, “Is this seat taken?” After my heart stopped fibrillating I said, “It is now.”

I got her a glass of the Chardonnay and we started to talk. I was amazed that we both grew up in the suburbs of New York and that we both liked the exact same wine (Cakebread). The conversation flowed smoother than the wine, and a lot sweeter. She mentioned she had gone to high school in Vidalia, Georgia, and was an avid University of Georgia football fan. We talked and talked and finally decided to head to dinner.

We each drove to a nearby Thai restaurant. As I held the door open for her to enter the restaurant, she said, “Well, as long as we’re having dinner, I suppose I should tell you my name.” She really didn’t need to. I replied that her name clearly was “Georgia.” She laughed and said, “Susan.”

I knew she was the girl of my dreams. So, JDate… fantasies do come true!
