Millions of people around the world have summarized their characters, likes and dislikes in just a few lines, but some descriptions are recycled time and time again. Just so you know what to look out for (and what to delete!), we bring you the 20 most common online dating clichés –  and what they really mean.

I’m a little bit crazy = I’m not crazy, zany or remotely interesting.

I’m a real travel junkie = I took a gap year and I haven’t got a job yet.

I’m easy going = I am indecisive, never make plans and rarely get out of bed before midday at the weekend. Or I’m neurotic and trying to hide it.

I enjoy nights in and nights out = I exist.

I don’t know what to write = I’ve just realised I have very few hobbies that I would tell other people about.

Looking for my partner in crime = My “crime” is likely to be sitting on the sofa eating Jaffa Cakes, which I will describe as “naughty”.

My life is fab = I am an overachiever and would really like to tell you all about it. But I don’t need you.

I’m so bubbly and up for a laugh = I’m very loud.

I’m funny = I assume as much.

I love laughing = I’m a human.

Work hard but play harder = I finish my job in the city, go to the pub and get chicken on the way home. I’m known to say: “You don’t have to be crazy to work here, but it helps.”

I’m searching for my soulmate = I’m a bit intense.

I’m looking for my knight in shining armour = I’m stuck in the Middle Ages and expect you to pay for every date.

I’m a nice guy = I’m either boring or lying.

I work out a lot = I spend too much time in the gym and like to drink foul-smelling protein shakes.

I’m looking for good banter = I’m a misogynist and might insult you – in the name of humour, of course. Bants.

My profile picture is old =This isn’t me.

I love to read = I carry books around in my bag.

My friends say I am [insert adjectives here] = I am none of these things.

I’m 6ft or 6ft plus = I’m 5ft 6.
