As we all know, hamantaschen are the traditional treat for Purim. And while I haven’t actually celebrated the holiday since I was in Jewish day school about 20 years ago, I still enjoy a good hamantash every now and then. The thing is, I don’t like the standard ones. You know the ones I’m talking about: the ones filled with raspberry, strawberry or apricot jam. They’re just, well, kind of boring. But who ever said those are the only ones to have? There are SO many options out there, so why not get creative with your hamantaschen this year?

I searched far and wide (hello, Pinterest!) for hamantaschen recipes that would make anyone a believer, whether or not they celebrate the holiday. There are some wacky ideas out there (i.e. sushi hamantaschen … that’s taking it a bit too far for my taste), but lots of great, delicious-looking ones, too. From sweet to savory, I think you’re going to love these unique takes on traditional hamantaschen. And since it’s Purim, after all, be sure to check out the drink pairing suggestions, too!

1. Dunkaroo-Inspired Hamantaschen

One of my all time favorite snacks as a child was the ever-so-unhealthy, yet totally delicious, Dunkaroos. So, when I stumbled upon a Dunkaroo-inspired hamantaschen recipe, I got very excited. This one is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. Nostalgia at its finest! Pair with Cabernet Sauvignon.

2. S’mores Hamantaschen

S’mores aren’t just for the bonfire. Nothing bad can come of combining warm marshmallows, melted chocolate, and graham crackers (or in this case, hamantaschen pastry crust), so this one definitely caught my eye. Give these s’mores hamantaschen a taste and you’ll be transported to your favorite camping memories in no time. Pair with craft beer.

3. Cinnamon Dulce De Leche Hamantaschen

I love anything dulce de leche-flavored, and I can imagine adding the cinnamon touch to it would make this Purim treat absolutely divine. Add in some bubbly and you’ve got a truly decadent treat thanks to this cinnamon dulce de leche hamantaschen recipe. Pair with champagne.

4. Mediterranean Hamantaschen

Hamantaschen don’t have to be sweet. In fact, I tend to prefer savory, so you can bet that this Mediterranean hamantaschen recipe spoke to me! The combo of goat cheese, basil, tomato and onion is enough to get my mouth watering. Pair with Chardonnay.

5. Caramelized Onion Hamantaschen

Another delicious savory option includes caramelized onions with lots of yummy spices. This caramelized onion hamantaschen recipe is totally perfect for an appetizer before a meal or a fun cocktail party snack. Pair with a dirty martini.

6. BBQ Chicken Pizza Hamantaschen

How could we not include a pizza-inspired recipe in this round up? Any sort of pizza hamantaschen would be scrumptious, but this BBQ chicken pizza hamantaschen recipe takes it to the next level. Pair with Sauvignon Blanc.

What are your plans for Purim? Do you celebrate? Even if you don’t, it’s simply a good excuse to gather your friends or family and indulge in some yummy hamantaschen. Pour a couple drinks and celebrate – Mordecai would want you to. Happy Purim!
